The Madrid mill was built in 1998 by the papermaker Papelera Peninsular to make newsprint before becoming part of Holmen Paper it in 2000.
In 2016, the Madrid mill joined the International Paper group when the company acquired mill with the intent to convert it to recycled containerboard to serve its EMEA corrugated box business. The acquisition included also associated recycling operations (CARPA) and a 50-percent ownership interest in a cogeneration facility delivering a large portion of the mill’s energy needs.
Since the conversion in 2018, the mill is producing recycled containerboard with an annual capacity of 400,000 metric tons. It is strategically located to support our corrugated packaging facilities throughout EMEA, and enables us to offer customers even more choices in terms of innovative, tailored and high performing packaging solutions.
